Mcaualy is a graduate of Louisiana State University with computer science as a major discipline. He worked as a programmer in the National Security Agency (NSA). Mcaualy worked in NSA for twenty-six years, from 1982 until his retirement in 2008.

Before his time in the NFL as a match official, he was refereeing at the high school level in Howard County, Maryland. During the period between 1994 to 1997, Terry was a referee in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In 1998, Mcaualy was a referee for the BCS National Championship Game at the Miami Orange Bowl. 

The player began his career in the NFL as a side judge on Walt Coleman's crew and worked the 2000 NFC Championship game in 1998. Terry became an NFL referee in 2001 and wore uniform number 77. The former NFL referee was the first to work a Super Bowl with fewer than five seasons of experience as a referee when he was the crew chief for Super Bowl XXXIX. 

Terry served as an NFL official from 1998 to 2018, and currently, he is a Rules Analyst for Sunday Night Football at NBC Sports. For the first time, he was seen as an on-air rules analyst for Sunday Night Football in June 2018. 

Controversy During Terry's Career

Terry was the referee at the Beer Bottle Game, which was the match between the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars and the Cleveland Browns. 

Mcaulay declared the game over after the fans started throwing plastic beer bottles and other objects at players and officials after he determined that Morgan never had control of the ball and awarded The Jaguars the ball. Later on, the game was again resumed due to NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue's decision to override McAulay's decision. 

The Jaguars won the exciting game by a score of 15-10.
